About the Artist
Adam Ashenfelter · Northlake, Texas (Dallas–Fort Worth metroplex)
This work starts with a bare birch panel and one irreversible decision at a time — no redoing a mark, no repainting over a mistake. That permanence is part of the appeal: it demands full presence and turns every choice into something real.
The real draw is the material itself — its grain, its absorption, the way it resists and rewards a steady hand — and the fun of coaxing a recognizable image out of nothing but stain and patience. Subjects range across portraits, western scenes, and whatever else catches an eye, chosen less for what they are than for the challenge of getting them right in one pass.
The work exists in the act of making it. The rest is incidental.
“To see if I can.”
— the driving statement, since day one
